Oil on Wood Panel, 11" x 14", 2016

This is the second of three paintings depicting a building exterior on Wooster Street in the SOHO district of New York City, where I lived for 11 years after grad school. I was inspired to create it when I took a wrong turn after leaving work and ran across these ever changing public art pieces by various graffiti artists and collectives. My paintings are built up with many successive layers of paint in the tried and true methods of the Old Masters. I make color and compositional choices based on intuition and feel, applying thick gestural brush strokes and scraping with a palette knife to create a rich blend of textures and broken color. I applied a coat of gloss varnish to the surface of the painting to protect the image and give it a professional finish. The sides of the panel are solid wood with beautifully dovetailed corners and D-rings with hanging wire are affixed to the back for a perfect contemporary look
